Holland, Ohio
Holland, Ohio
Holland is a village in eastern Springfield Township, Lucas County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Toledo. The population was 1,664 at the 2020 census.
History
The village was originally known as Drakes, possibly named after a family or referencing the large number of geese in the area. It was later called Hardy, likely after Samuel Hardy, a signer of a document ceding northwest territories of Virginia to the United States government.
The current name, Holland, has multiple origin theories:
- It may reference the ditches dug in the 1850s to divert swamp water, reminiscent of Dutch canals.
- Some believe it was named for the large number of Dutch settlers, though this is disputed.
- The most likely origin comes from Franklin Hall, an early house builder, who requested the area be called "Hall Land." A clerk or official reportedly changed the "a" to an "o" and removed one "l", resulting in "Holland."
The village saw significant development with the arrival of the railroad in the 1850s. By 1880, Holland had a population of 230 and was experiencing growth in both freight and passenger traffic.
